Description
Location: The town of Terrasini lies on the Gulf of Castellammare, a short stretch of coast west of Palermo where the mountains run down to a sea of unusually clear water.
Its name is said to come from “Terra delli Sini,” the land of the bays, a reference to the many small inlets that shape its shoreline.
The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and over the centuries it passed through Phoenician, Roman, Arab, and Norman hands, each leaving traces in the surrounding landscape.
Today Terrasini is best known for its coastline, for the nature reserve of Capo Rama with its sixteenth century watchtower, and for Palazzo D’Aumale, a former Bourbon building on the seafront that now houses the regional museum.
Inside the museum stands one of Sicily’s finest collections of painted carts, the carretti siciliani, whose bright panels tell stories of knights and saints.
Owing to its layered history, a visit to Terrasini offers many opportunities for historical, artistic, and cultural enrichment.
From here, one can easily reach the medieval castle of Carini and its famous legend, the Greek temple and theater of Segesta, the seaside village of Scopello, and the wild beauty of the Zingaro Nature Reserve.
At Easter the town celebrates the Festa di li Schietti, an old rite in which the unmarried men lift a decorated orange tree to prove their strength before the women of the town.
For those who love the outdoors, Terrasini offers picturesque walks along the cliffs, sea kayaking, and diving in waters as ancient as they are beautiful.
And no visit would be complete without following the wine roads of western Sicily, where the vineyards around Alcamo produce the celebrated Bianco d’Alcamo, alongside the Grillo, Catarratto, and Nero d’Avola that have made this corner of the island famous.
Finally, it should be noted that this stretch of coast offers unparalleled culinary experiences, built on the daily catch of its fishing boats and the rich tradition of Sicilian sweets.
transportation
From Palermo Airport (PMO, Falcone e Borsellino, Punta Raisi):
This is the closest airport, only about 4 km from Terrasini. The easiest way to reach the hotel is by taxi, a short ride of roughly 10 to 15 minutes. Taxis are available directly outside the arrivals terminal. We recommend agreeing on the fare with the driver before departure.
For maximum convenience, we recommend arranging your airport transfer directly with the hotel, which offers this service on request. Please contact the hotel in advance to coordinate pick-up and drop-off according to your arrival and departure times.
From Trapani Airport (TPS, Vincenzo Florio, Birgi):
This airport is about 78 km away, and there is no direct connection, so allow extra time.
By taxi or pre-booked transfer, the journey takes roughly 50 to 55 minutes along the A29 motorway and is the most comfortable option.
By train, take the airport shuttle bus to Trapani station, then a regional Trenitalia train to Cinisi-Terrasini, the station serving the town. This route involves a change and takes well over two hours in total, so it suits travellers who prefer not to drive and are not in a hurry. Timetables can be checked in advance at www.trenitalia.com.
From the city of Palermo:
By train, take a regional service from Palermo Centrale toward Trapani and get off at Cinisi-Terrasini. The journey takes roughly one hour, and a one-way ticket costs around 6 Euro.
By car, Terrasini is about 40 minutes from the city centre via the A29 motorway in the direction of Trapani.
